Oni’s Gaze

In Konjaku Monogatari-shū (12th century), oni were described as beings dwelling at the edges of the world, bringing misfortune to humans. They embodied unrestrained passions and wrath, yet sometimes acted as guardians who punished wrongdoers. Their horns, fierce faces, and superhuman strength evoked both terror and awe for their power.
